Cultivating a Healthy Entrepreneurial Mindset

You love what you do and the flexibility of being your own boss but you:

  • Feel stuck
  • Still haven’t broken through the six-figure mark
  • Are secretly wondering if you should give up on your dream of being an entrepreneur and go back to working for someone else

Anne Lowenthal

Is this you? I’ve often wondered: are entrepreneurs born or made? We all know people who were clearly destined to be entrepreneurs and for whom the skills to run their own business come naturally. I’m not one of them. My desire to start and run my own business came later in life, years after completing an MBA/MPH program and working as an investment analyst at large financial institutions for many years. When my son was young I exited the work force and spent several years pursuing meaningful volunteer work while I took classes and dabbled in various wellness related endeavors but didn’t really make much money. Nothing I had done educationally or professionally had prepared me to run my own business and I felt clueless.

I’m a natural researcher with a quick, curious mind but that takes you only so far in running a business. There are so many skills to master and hats to wear. And it can be quite lonely as a solo entrepreneur; I like kicking around ideas and collaborating with a partner and need someone to hold me accountable to deadlines.

But I had no desire to go back to long days in an office with little flexibility or control over my time. So the question was, could I develop the skill sets and mindset to be a successful entrepreneur?

Mindset, I believe, is the single most important determinant of whether you’ll be successful as an entrepreneur. Personal development and mindset work have been critical for me in making the leap to starting and leading a successful business venture. It helps that I’ve chosen a business model (network marketing) where mindset work and personal development are ubiquitous; every successful network marketer or solo entrepreneur I know is tuned into the power of personal development. Being forced to confront your “stuff”, all the limiting beliefs surrounding money, and self-worth, helps you grow in a way that no “job” ever could.

Network marketing also offers the advantage of having your own business where you are solely responsible for your results but yet you have team members both above you (upline) and below you (downline) who have an interest and incentive to see you succeed. I love the collaborative and team focused approach of this business model. You get to choose who you partner with and celebrate their successes as much as your own.

Here are some of my top suggestions for solo entrepreneurs struggling to get their business to the next level:

  • Hire a business and/or life coach and/or become part of a supportive community of like-minded entrepreneurs like the Dream Factory.
  • Find an accountability partner who you’ll connect with for short phone calls each business day to hold you accountable for the top 2 or 3 tasks you need to complete each day.
  • Delegate or hire out tasks that are outside of your “zone of genius” and bog you down and stress you out.
  • Spend at least 15 minutes a day reading or listening to a personal development book. A few of my top suggestions:

“The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson

“The Big Leap” by Gay Hendricks

“Do Less, Achieve More” by Chin-Ning Chu
